German Research Foundation promotes new Collaborative Research Centre in Hamburg Particle Physics
The German Research Foundation DFG promotes the new collaborative research centre “Particles, Strings and the Early Universe: the Structure of Matter and Space-Time” which is to be established on July 1st, 2006.
The main interest of research is particle physics and its interaction with string theory and cosmology of the early universe. The topics particularly include physics beyond the Standard Model, neutrino physics, the mechanism of mass production as well as finding answers to the origin of dark matter and dark energy.
The collaborative research centre is a comprehensive collaboration of the University of Hamburg and DESY groups. University participants are the Institute of Experimental Physics, the observatory, the mathematical faculty and the II. Institute for Theoretical Physics, its member Prof. Jan Louis also being appointed as the spokesman of the research team. DESY participants in the new collaborative research centre are experimental physicists and theorists as well.
In total, the research centre consists of 18 closely connected projects. It is funded with approx. 1.5 million Euros annually and scheduled for a maximum of 12 years.
