ARE WE BATHING IN DARK MATTER?

Christoph Krieger, Experimentalphysiker (Universität Hamburg/DESY)

Physicists have been searching for dark matter in experiments for many years - so far without success. But why are we so sure that dark matter exists? And why haven't we been able to see it yet? What if we were bathing in dark matter all the time without realising it because we don't get wet? What could a dark matter detection device look like, and can we build this experiment in a large hall under the Volkspark? Dr Christoph Krieger is a senior scientist in the Quantum Universe Cluster of Excellence at the University of Hamburg and head of the MADMAX experiment in Hamburg. He has been developing experiments to detect dark matter for over 10 years and has participated in experiments to detect axions, dark photons and even cameleons in Germany and at CERN in Geneva. His great hope is the discovery of axion dark matter right next to his office in the shielded experiment hall (SHELL) on the DESY site.
