Deformation Quantization with a particular view towards the singular case

Markus Pflaum (Colorado University)

Deformation quantization was introduced by Bayen, Flato, Fronsdal, Lichnerowicz and Sternheimer in 1978 as one approach to describe in a mathematically precise way what physicists understand by quantization. In the talk the fundamental concept of deformation quantization will be presented and the main existence results for deformation quantizations on symplectic and Poisson manifolds will be stated. The situation becomes more complicated when considering singular and infinite dimensional phase spaces as they appear for example by symplectic reduction, as moduli spaces or in field theories. Then there are only partial results on the existence of deformation quantizations. The method of BRST (or BFV) quantization of singular symplectically reduced phase spaces is sketched.
