ROLE? OUT! Gender Stereotypes and Role Models in Science and Society:

10:30 English Talk - Prof. Juliane Degner: "I'm the least sexist person..." - Why It is misleading and dangerous to believe that you are free of prejudice (Registration required)

Men can't talk about feelings and can't wrap presents, but women are always guided by their feelings and can't park backwards. Anyone who thinks that such cliches and prejudices don't matter nowadays is wrong. Gender research has shown that stereotypes in daily "doing gender" (West / Zimmerman 1989) play a crucial role in legitimizing inequalities - and thus lead to daily "doing difference" (West / Fenstermaker 1995). It is therefore clear that common attitudes to gender roles also influence our behavior on a professional level. Unknowingly, this helps us to consolidate existing differences in the career opportunities of men and women. The event provides an opportunity to engage with the topic of "gender stereotypes and role models" and to reflect one's own behavior. Sensitization is the first step towards positive changes in everyday working life and the coexistence of women and men.
