String Theory SeminarCoherent States as a Route to Non-Perturbative String Theory

I will discuss a sense in which quantum gravity, and in particular non-perturbative string theory, may be defined (in a background-independent sense) using worldsheet methods. The key concept leading to progress is the notion of a coherent state (and its various manifestations). I will also review the defining properties of coherent states in string theory, and (time-permitting) sketch derivations of offshell, onshell, primaries, descendants, local and non-local manifestations thereof.
