European network GATIS now constituted

Under the leadership of the DESY theory group, eleven renowned academic institutions joined forces in the GATIS research and training network. Until the year 2016, this initiative will be funded by the European Commission with almost 4 million euros.

The scientific goal of GATIS (Gauge Theory as an Integrable System) is the development of highly innovative quantum physics calculation methods. The advancement of technologies from particle physics, mathematics and computer algebra will provide new fundamentals, particularly for models physicists use for example to describe the particle collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva.

“With the Marie Curie Network GATIS, young scientists get ideal training possibilities in a very complex and interdisciplinary research environment. Simultaneously, the close network with some of the largest theoretical particle physics centres in Europe offers an excellent basis for the establishment of scientific contacts and for international collaboration,” said network coordinator Professor Volker Schomerus from the DESY theory group.

Apart from DESY, institutions participating in the network are Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, King's College and Queen Mary University in London, University of Durham, Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique and École Normale Supérieure in Paris, University of Porto, and also the Scandinavian research laboratory Nordita and Uppsala University in Sweden.

GATIS also breaks new ground in cooperating with partners of the private sector. The GATIS team includes the German agencies Milde Marketing in Berlin and Mann-beisst-Hund in Hamburg, the internationally operating financial institute Deloitte, the Italian Sissa Medialab and the e-learning company Epigeum based in England. These partners offer assistance to GATIS in training and communication of scientific findings.
