Two million euros for nano research

University of Kiel physicists develop instruments at DESY

Physicists of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) raised funds amounting to about two million euros for three collaborative research projects at DESY.  With this financial support of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the scientists will develop unique high performance instruments for experiments with brilliant X-ray radiation. Their goal is to better understand liquid surfaces and the interfaces of solid materials; this will create the basis to develop new materials.

The projects  will investigate and simulate the behavior of electrons and molecules on surfaces and are located in the Ruprecht Haensel Laboratory. The joint facility of CAU and DESY bundles the instrumental and methodical developments and provides the technology to international cooperation partners.

The CAU president, Professor Gerhard Fouquet, congratulated his colleagues for the support granted by the BMBF: “Another great success for the research focus ‘Nano Science and Surface Research’ at CAU. With its support, the ministry acknowledges the high scientific expertise of the Kiel scientists who devote themselves to the study of ultra-small structures.”

These new collaborative research projects strengthen the close cooperation of the Kiel and Hamburg scientists, DESY director of research Professor Edgar Weckert pointed out. “DESYs X-ray sources FLASH and PETRA III are ideal super microscopes to observe and understand structures and processes in the nanoworld. The approved projects will markedly extend the possibilities to investigate the nanocosm.”
