BioStruct-X - A New Structural Biology Platform

Kick-Off Meeting at EMBL/DESY

High-profile structural biology research has just become more accessible. BioStruct-X, a new EU-funded project, will be holding its kick-off meeting at DESY’s worldwide unique free electron laser FLASH today and tomorrow. Managed by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Hamburg branch, and including partners such as DESY and the European X-ray Free Electron Laser European XFEL, BioStruct-X creates a multi-national research platform for established and emerging techniques in structural biology and provides researchers with access to eleven large-scale facilities across Europe.

The BioStruct-X consortium, comprising nineteen European partners, supports four key areas: (1) macromolecular X-ray crystallography, (2) biological small-angle X-ray scattering, (3) biological X-ray imaging – all based at state-of-the-art high-brilliance synchrotron radiation sources – as well as (4) protein production and high-throughput crystallisation. With the European XFEL as a partner, structural biologists also have the perspective of using the world’s most powerful X-ray free-electron laser in the near future.

However, transnational access to large-scale facilities is only one facet of the BioStruct-X project. It is complemented by joint research activities of the project partners, training of young scientists, and efforts to foster networking activities in the participating scientific communities. The EU funds the project with nine million euros.

Approximately one hundred participants are expected to attend the project’s kick-off meeting. Representatives from all BioStruct-X partners will gather to inform future users about the project activities. Meeting participants will also get the chance to talk to the EU officer in charge.
