   Determining the strong coupling \alpha_s by lattice gauge theory

Abstract:
We explain how the strong coupling at large energies can be determined 
by means of lattice gauge theory. Particular emphasis is put on how the 
different systematic errors are controlled. Results obtained by the 
ALPHA-collaboration on the APE-computers at Zeuthen are presented: 
 1) The Lambda-parameter in the flavourless theory as a test case
    and 
 2) the current status of the computation
    of the energy dependence of the coupling with dynamical quarks.
