The dCache storage element and it's role in the LHC era

dCache is a storage solution jointly developed at DESY and FermiLab which manages
huge amounts of data server nodes to form a giant virtual disk featuring
transparent file migration to and from backend tape systems.
This talk gives an overview of the project and outlines the key concepts of the system.
Especially the role of dCache in the Tier model of the LHC grid is explained.
The talk finishes by giving some outlook on current developments and project challenges.
