Software revision control with SVN - a new central service at DESY

As an introduction the typical work cycle for software development with subversion
revision control (SVN) is presented. Then the advantage of SVN over the widely used
CVS is discussed and the structure of a SVN repository is described. Some decisions
for the setup of the SVN service at DESY were taken, which are explained further,
such as the choice of the authentication mechanism for write access to the
repositories, the selection of a web interface and the design of an administrative
interface. Finally the current status of the project and next steps are mentioned.
