Zvenigorod

Zvenigorod is a Russian town hardly less ancient than even Moscow. This is one of the old places that Rus' (the ancient Russian state) came from. Therefore, its history is interesting and in many respects unique.

Beautifully preserved are numerous ancient and cultural monuments in Zvenigorod. In the territory of Savvino-Storozhevsky monastery one can visit the venerable Savva's cell; the ancient Kremlin (the so-called "Small Town") with Uspensky Cathedral dating back as early as the turn of 14th century is decorated with the masterpieces of Andrei Rublev's frescos. The ancient village called "Savva sloboda" and poet Taneev's museum are also among the places of interest.

Looking at the medieval fortress of Small Town, its white-stone Uspenski Cathedral one is sure to feel like sunk in the times of ancient Moscow ruled by the tsars. The architecture of the Savvino-Storozhevsky monastery is a vivid illustration of how Russian arcitecture has evolved through centuries, beginning 15th century and till early 20th.
