In Zeuthen DESY offers opportunities for master and doctoral theses in the following fields of research: particle physics, astroparticle physics and accelerator physics and technology. DESY in Zeuthen does not grant master or doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with several universities. Candidates will have to comply with the universities' terms of admission for master and doctoral theses.

Particle physics

  • Experimental particle physics at the LHC: Experimente ATLAS und CMS
  • Experimental particle physics at the project: ILC-Projekt
  • Particle physics theory T-Zeuthen: phenomenology of elementary particles, quantum field theory and lattice gauge theories

Astroparticle physics

Astroparticle physics combines methods and questions from astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics, enabling the observation of fundamental processes in the universe. Doctoral theses as well as bachelor and master theses can be carried out at the various experimental research projects of neutrino and gamma astronomy, as well as in theoretical physics.
You will find more information here.

Accelerator physics and technology

The photo injector test facility PITZ is DESY’s very own small linear accelerator operated at the Zeuthen institute. It is used for the development and optimisation of laser-driven high-brilliance radio-frequency electron sources for future free-electron lasers and linear accelerators.

The research profile at DESY in Zeuthen also encompasses work for the free-electron laser FLASH, the synchrotron radiation source PETRA III and the European XFEL in Hamburg and Schleswig Holstein.
