Particle and Astroparticle Physics Colloquium

From dark matter axions to the early universe

Ed Hardy

I will discuss the connections between early universe cosmology and experimental searches for QCD axion dark matter. On one hand, a discovery of axion dark matter would lead to insights into the cosmological evolution of the Universe at its early moments, far beyond current observations. Conversely, in well-motivated cosmological scenarios, up to 50% of axion dark matter can be bound in dark matter substructure consisting of solitonic “axion stars”, which have densities a million times larger than the local dark matter. In these scenarios, direct searches for a smooth axion background would be weakened, but new approaches searching for transient enhancements or indirect signals may be possible. We invite you to attend the presentation in person at the DESY Auditorium. We will also offer a webcast to this colloquium. https://desy.zoom.us/j/99616528733 Meeting ID: 996 1652 8733 Meeting Password: 733220
