pion pion scattering & the sigma from lattice QCD — dispersing some confusion? (1/7)

Prof. Jozef Dudek (William & Mary / Jefferson Lab)

Extracting hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes from lattice QCD computed finite-volume spectra has become commonplace, with a number of systems in the light quark and charm sectors studied. When narrow resonances feature, their parameters can typically be reliably determined even without knowledge of the exact form of the energy dependence of the scattering matrix, provided sufficient flexibility is present in the parameterization. On the other hand, broad resonances, like the sigma in pion pion scattering have not been pinned down, despite relatively high quality lattice data. I will present a possible reason for this problem, and a solution, previously applied to experimental partial-wave data, based upon the use of crossing symmetry as represented by dispersion relations coupling different pion pion isospins and partial waves.
