Q (F. Sauli):
The need of hadron beams and "damaged" cathodes seems rather mysterious. Do chambers
age in hadron beams also without charge amplicication ? If not, what is the speciality of
hadrons?
A (C. P.):
Malter effect was observed in hadron beams only after chamber irradiation.
Cathode surfaces of aged chambers show deposits that were not there before,
but this happens only after irradiation.
