The jurist Christian Scherf first worked for the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg where he was in charge of national science and research financing in the department of finances, before becoming Administrative Director of the GKSS research centre in Geesthacht in 2000. He joined the DESY Board of Directors in June 2002.
